Bridging the Digital/Field Divide with Event Signups on VAN


Ahead of the 2018 midterms, we've been thinking a lot about how to help our clients perform the same tasks online as they do offline, bridging our digital and organizing tools. One of the clearest and most frequently requested workflows we hear from organizers is the need to more quickly and more seamlessly collect volunteer signups. To that end, we’re excited to announce we've developed public event sign-up forms on VAN.

With this release, organizers creating an event can publish an online sign-up form by simply checking a box, without needing to access our digital tools via Online Actions. By doing so, they will create a linked online signup form with all of the features and ease of use that exist within our other Online Actions. They can then share that form URL with supporters and encourage them to sign up, which streamlines the process for everyone involved.

Previously, organizers would create the event in VAN or VoteBuilder, pull volunteer lists, send emails, make phone calls, and send text messages asking volunteers to attend. Then, they would need to manually enter all of their RSVPs. With this update, organizers can spend less time entering data and more time doing the work they love.  These forms are also FastAction enabled, so volunteers are able to RSVP with the click of a button.

There are two exciting components of this feature that we want to highlight: form customization and email integration.


The form doesn’t require organizers to do any design work, but your digital team can still build out a template with your branding. We built this to be easy for organizers to use, while still offering flexibility for designers.

Email Integration

Organizers can further streamline their workflow by integrating this with Targeted Email. They can prepare an automated email series to go out: reminding volunteers to show up for the event and thanking them afterward. Every volunteer who signs up for the event with the online form will be processed as an Event Signup, along with any offline volunteer signups, tagged with an Activist Code so that pulling the list afterward will be effortless and streamlined.

Previously, he served in the Obama Administration as New Media Manager for the Department of the Treasury, as the Director of Online Communications for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) during both the 2006 and 2008 cycles, and as Director of Online Communications for the 2004 Democratic National Convention.
